Issues for Parents

September 14, 2010 | By Bethany Murphy In Education, Local Solutions for Local SchoolsAs America’s young people return to school this month, the federal government is becoming more involved than ever in their education. As Heritage Foundation experts Lindsey Burke and Jennifer Marshall explain, the Obama administration is forcing states to adopt “voluntary,” one-size-fits all standards, despite fresh research showing that top-down standardization does not yield results. The administration is pouring more money than ever into the federal Department of Education, ignoring additional research affirming that more money leads to more problems. In September of last year the administration published the Common Core State Standards Initiative, which amounts to yet another attempt by the federal government to control education requirements nationwide. This “voluntary” program is linked to Title I funding, a source of income nearly every school district in the nation relies upon, thus ensuring national (and often involuntary) participation. Simply adopting national standards will not ensure an improvement in performance. Burke and Marshall show that “the relationship between existence of standards and strong educational outcomes is not clear. While the countries that outperform the United States on international tests have national standards, so do most of those countries that score lower than the U.S.” Worse, national standards might lower the bar for well-performing schools. A Heritage Factsheet on the subject states that “the rigor and content of national standards would tend toward the average among states, undercutting states with higher quality standards like Massachusetts, California, and Virginia.” The Obama administration has launched a new grant program, Race to the Top, whose funding is contingent upon states implementing these standards. Many states balked at losing control of their education standards for a one-time payout and declined to enter the program. Another state, New Jersey, lost out on the funding due to a single mistake in the 1,000 page application. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie famously blasted the federal bureaucrats that cost his state the $400 million grant. This same bureaucracy is now responsible for the education of tens of millions of America’s youth. Even though the United States spends three times as much on education today as in the 1970s, there has been little to no improvement in graduation rates and academic achievement. A new Heritage Factsheet asserts that “states should be freed from burdensome federal education mandates and have greater flexibility to direct education resources, targeting resources more efficiently to local needs.” Local solutions are the key to empowering schools, administrators, parents and students towards a better future. |
| September 17, 2010 | by Phyllis Schlafly |
| The No Child Left Behind Act, which allowed states to set their own public school standards for “proficiency,” is opposed and considered a failure by all factions in the education world. Therefore, we obviously should force all kids in every state to be held to uniform national standards of proficiency. Right? No; wrong. But that bad idea is being aggressively promoted by the Obama Administration. The mailed fist in the velvet glove is the extraordinary river of taxpayers’ money used to force compliance.
Having taken over major parts of the banking industry, the mortgage industry, the auto industry, the college student-loan industry, and the health-care industry, the Obama Administration is now taking over the $600 billion public-school industry with taxpayers’ money from the Stimulus package. The White House concedes that “stimulus” is a negative word and avoids its use because it obviously didn’t stimulate jobs, but Stimulus dollars will stimulate the takeover of our children’s minds under Common Core Standards, the moniker for forcing national curriculum standards on all public schools. PARENTS!! This is NOT a Democrat or Republican issue, it is an issue for ALL parents! Do YOU want to have the right to say how your child is raised or do you want the government to have the final say?? The UN thinks they can better decide how your children should be raised, educated, etc. There’s a link to a petition to stop the UN’s proposal. Check this out!!

House Democrats Pass Bill to Grill School Children about Sexual Preference
by Connie Hair 09/20/2010
At the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee hearing last Thursday, Democrats passed a bill to require federal health officials to question anyone seeking services from Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) community health centers or other programs about their sexual orientation and “gender identity.”
Introduced by Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), H.R. 6109 requires HHS to obtain, retain and analyze sexual identity information from patients who seek healthcare, including children.
“This bill is about collecting data, no more, no less,” Baldwin said.
According to Baldwin, the current “lack of cultural competency” among federal officials means that “we are left with gaping holes in our knowledge on LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) policy” resulting in “significant health disparities.”
Baldwin is the first openly-declared lesbian elected to Congress.
The new bill’s requirements would apply to all HHS health service programs, requiring the health service employees to ask everyone receiving services their sexual orientation and gender identity — including those that focus on children at school-based health centers. Children who seek help at government-funded school health clinics would be asked whether or not they are gay, lesbian, bisexual or if they know their gender identity.
Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), top Republican on the committee, said the legislation was grossly intrusive.
“For the life of me I do not see any reason at all to do this bill,” Barton said. “It would require any individual who seeks services from any program offered by HHS to answer questions about their sexual orientation and gender identity. While I assume most adults understand and know what that is, it is inconceivable that a child in a program would even know what some of the terms mean.”
Of course, Democrats voted the bill out of committee with 12 Democrats voting yes and 10 Republicans voting no. Democrats were light on the vote due to absences from several members, including Rep. Zach Space (D-Ohio) who hastily exited the hearing room when the bill was called up for consideration.
Why not just vote “no” on the bill, Mr. Space?

Restricting Parental Access to the Classroom
I can’t seem to get the link right, but if you go to www.parentalrights.org and type in Big Lake High School, I’ll bet it will come up, and you’d better check this out. At Big Lake High School in Minnesota, the current student handbook (pp.7-8) declares that “Big Lake High School does not allow students to bring guests or visitors to classes,” which includes parents. Even more importantly, the events that unfolded in Big Lake have played out numerous other times as well, throughout the country. And the courts have consistently upheld such decisions.

Want your kids surfing sexual sites – at SCHOOL no less??? If the United States ratifies the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child, this could happen HERE!
Schools in one region of Scotland are lifting the Internet filters on their school computers so students will be able to access sexually explicit websites if they choose, according to a new report from the Christian Institute. We have to be aware of what is happening in schools everywhere!
Please check out the article linked below. The U.N. is moving into our schools in the form of the International Baccalaureate Program. It is in 3 schools in Mesa. “This U.N. curriculum is extremely hostile to Christians. It’s hostile to American values and ideas and very big on humanism, redistribution of wealth, and very big on pluralism and that all religions are equal,” Worldview Weekend President Brandon Howse Howse told WND.

Parents – It is time to WAKE UP and GET INVOLVED!
Okay, so if you’re concerned about what’s happening in the schools, what can you do? Most of you have family, children and/or grandchildren in other states if not in Arizona. We ALL need to get more educated on what is and is not being taught in the schools. We need to attend school board meetings. We need to make sure conservatives are elected to the school board. The Mesa School Board will have 2 openings at the end of the year, and I’m running for one of them.
We need to find out what textbooks are being used. It is no wonder that many younger people are not participating in the outrage against government spending, erosion of our God-given rights and so on. They haven’t been taught about our Constitution, how capitalism is a good thing. They’ve been taught to depend on the government, that the government will take care of them, that capitalism is bad, that America is bad. We’ve allowed prayer to be removed from our schools. Our children are being taught about “alternative lifestyles.” We have to take back our schools now.
